Broken Toe Outs Thomson; Ludwig Mans Up For Edwards

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A broken toe will sideline Strikeforce World Lightweight (155 lb. limit) Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson from his scheduled title defense against Yves Edwards (34-14-1) in the main event of Strikeforce “Destruction” at San Jose’s HP Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 21.
World Muay Thai champion and mixed martial arts (MMA) knockout artist, Duane “Bang” Ludwig (17-8), will step up to face Edwards in the cage at a catch weight of 164 lbs.
Thomson sustained torn ligaments in one of his toes during a routine training session last week. He is expected to be out of action for several months.
The 30-year-old Ludwig is coming off a sensational first round stoppage of Sam “The Squeeze” Morgan, a veteran of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter,” on Friday, October 3rd. He has since remained in top physical form while preparing other competitors for battle.
Ludwig is no stranger to imposing victories. The Denver, Colorado native shattered the all-time record for quickest finish in MMA history when he delivered a crushing right hand that leveled Jonathan Goulet only 11 seconds into their Spike TV live, televised matchup on January 16, 2006. To date, the record still stands.
A former professional kickboxer who crossed over to the hybrid combat sport that is MMA, Ludwig reached the pinnacle of his professional kickboxing career when he captured the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Junior Middleweight Muay Thai championship in Denver in January 2004. The victory was by no means simple as he was forced to contend with Thailand native Malaipet Sitprapom in a five-round, toe-to-toe war before earning a unanimous decision from the judges.
Ludwig displayed tremendous potential by winning 8 of his first 10 mixed martial arts contests, but it was his 11th start on January 25, 2003 in which he made his first big mark in the sport.
Matched with former UFC 155 pound champion, Jens “Little Evil” Pulver, in the main event of a star-studded card at Montreal, Canada’s Pierre Charbonneau Centre, Ludwig shocked those looking on when he caught Pulver with a punishing right hand that prompted the referee to call a stoppage to the bout at the 1:13 mark of the bout’s first round.
Like Ludwig, Edwards has triumphed over a number of other notable rivals, including Rich Clementi, Dokonjonosuke Mishima, James Edson Berto, and Hermes Franca, whom Edwards defeated twice.
Edwards, a native of The Bahamas, took up Karate at age nine and, soon after, began studying Kung-Fu. After relocating to Houston, Texas at the age of 15, he fell in love with mixed martial arts (MMA) and gradually immersed himself in various components of the sport, most notably Muay Thai, western boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Edwards later dubbed his hybrid style of combat “Thug Jitsu.”
It is his passion for combat that recently lured Edwards to Coconut Creek, Florida, where the 11-year veteran of professional MMA has become a full fledged member of star-filled fight squad, American Top Team.

All proceeds from this seminar will go to our friend James McGrory. James is Jay and Mandy's long time friend and tattooist from Denver, Colorado. He is both an amazing artist and and equally amazing person. In late September he was riding his motorcycle to his shop when a delivery truck ran a red light and smashed into him. James was in a coma for the first couple of weeks and is still in the hospital suffering from massive head trauma and ongoing problems with infections. On top of having no health insurance, James and his wife Lindsey are also without family that can support them in this crisis. Our goal with this seminar is not to help with medical bills as that is obviously going to be an astronomical bill. We are hoping to raise as much as possible to help them with their immediate needs such as food, gas, and rent. As stressful as things may get in life sometimes, something like this truly reminds us that anything can happen to us on any given day. Duane Ludwig seeks redemption at Strikeforce

This weekend UFC vet Duane “Bang” Ludwig returns to Strikeforce for a rematch with UFC vet Sam Morgan, the man who KO’d Ludwig back in April ’05. In the last twelve months Duane defeated Mario Stapel in Ring of Fire at 170 then lost to Takanori Gomi in Sengoku at 155, two fights that fit a pattern of moving between classes Duane has faced for much of his career. Now fighting at a catch weight Ludwig looks to redeem himself and move on with his career.
KM: How do you feel about returning to Strikeforce?
DL: I feel great returning to Strikeforce because it has been a year actually. It feels good to get back to fighting. I haven’t fought since March. Strikeforce always takes care of me so I’m really excited.
KM: By contrast how do you feel about returning to Colorado and the home of Ring of Fire?
DL: I feel really good. They are working together so there are no problems. I always like to fight in my home town. It should be good. I’m not too sure about the working relationship. I know Sven Bean, the Ring of Fire promoter, was hired to do Strikeforce’s matchmaking and a few other things but I’m not too sure. I’m not concerned with those things.
KM: Your last fight in Strikeforce was against Paul Daley who is now fighting for the EliteXC title. Can you describe that fight and tell us your thoughts on him as a fighter?
DL: He is a great fighter. He is very explosive and comes to fight. I wish him the best. He trains hard and was just the better man that night. He has a tough fight with Jake Shields so we’ll see how that goes.
KM: Next you fought Mario Stapel. He trained with some Chute Boxe guys and last I knew was a brown belt in jiu-jitsu. What happened?
DL: I caught him with a good shot, I think a left hook. He came at me and I caught him right away and scared him. From there I just stay focused, pushed the pace, and was able to catch him. I was really focused and trained hard. I went out to Vegas and came in ready. I have had so many fights sometimes fighting is just kind of a job, not something I actually want to do sometimes so I don’t always focus. For that one I was definitely focused.
KM: Weren’t those two at 170 pounds?
DL: Yes.
KM: Your last fight I think was at 155 against Gomi.
DL: Yes.
KM: Is this fight going to be back at Welterweight?
DL: Actually 165, a catch weight.
KM: Why did you return to 155 to fight Gomi?
DL: That was the reason, to fight Gomi. They gave me a two week notice and I was walking around at 183. It goes back to what I said before it takes certain fights to motivate me again and that was definitely one of those fights. It wasn’t easy but I was focused during the weight cut and training and everything fell into place. I’ve had so many fights I’m hit or miss depending on the opponent. It is my responsibility as an athlete to make sure I show up to fight.
KM: I’m glad you have that maturity to recognize that and have that perspective.
DL: I guess I realized that a year-and-a-half ago. You watch legends fight and sometimes they are off. I never really understood it but now I do.
KM: That fight against Gomi was stopped on a cut. What happened and do you feel you “lost” that fight?
DL: I don’t feel I lost. I thought I was doing pretty well. He caught me with a good left cross but I could have kept fighting. I just think the Japanese don’t fully understand the universal rules system. It was definitely a deep cut but it wasn’t obstructing my vision at all. It was on my nose, not above my eye. I thought it was a premature stoppage but that is the way it goes. It was a dangerous fight for Gomi because of my record and background. It does nothing for him to beat me and would definitely hurt him to lose to me. I’m definitely upset by the call but what can I do? Not much.
KM: Then is this catch weight your ideal weight?
DL: 165 is a good weight for me. I walk around like 180. I think 170 is too heavy and 155 is too low for me. The 160 weight class in EliteXC is probably the ideal weight class.
KM: What are your thoughts on EliteXC and their weight classes?
DL: I think it is great, a middle ground and would be perfect with me but I’m happy with Strikeforce and Ring of Fire.
KM: That is what I was wondering, if you are looking to fight in EliteXC.
DL: No, no, no.
KM: What do you think of Sam Morgan and what do you think of fighting him?
DL: I think he is a very tough gamer. I don’t think he is overly skilled in any one department but he comes to fight. I want to thank him for giving me a rematch; I really appreciate the chance to redeem myself.
KM: Tell us about that first fight you two had.
DL: That was just me not showing up to fight but he did. He gets a lot of credit for showing up for a war and I showed up for a paycheck. That is my responsibility to do my job. It affects you when you come from a show in Japan with 15-20,000 people to a show with a couple thousand people and you don’t realize that until the bell rings and you are just not up for the fight. (Note: Duane’s fight prior to the first fight with Morgan was against BJ Penn in K-1). I’m learning who I am as a person. I take breaks between fights and get that hunger, that fire again and I need to take fights that motivate me. On the flipside I’m not scared to fight anybody. It is good to get a payday but that is not the reason I fight. To have that opponent or whatever it is that gets you in the mode to have a war is what you need to grab. For me it is the opponent.
KM: On the one hand he has a win over you and 68% of his wins are by submission which during your UFC time was thought of as your weakness. This is a chance to not only rematch but face a UFC vet who has that submission percentage. How do you feel about that perspective?
DL: Beating him helps me, my own personal agenda. I’m looking to redeem myself and go out there to put on a good fight.
KM: The other way to look at him is he is coming off three losses.
DL: Yeah, career-wise it does nothing for me. I don’t care what he’s done or who he has beaten except he has beaten me. I’m just getting my rematch.
KM: You have said a couple times here you have identified a problem of not focusing or just showing up for a paycheck but what are you doing about it?
DL: I’m making sure I take opponents that motivate me and take time off between fights.
KM: So it’s not like you see a sports psychologist or get advice from other fighters. It is more internal than external.
DL: Yeah, it is a matter of having an opponent that fires me up and the time in-between. The more time off the more you want it.
KM: Anything different in training?
DL: I had a really good camp this time. I stayed in Colorado and had a few people help me. Nate Marquardt and a good group of guys who were all pushing each other.
KM: So the story here is you at a turning point in your career after recognizing your need to be motivated?
DL: Yeah, a turning point as far as me recognizing myself and that I’ve matured as a fighter.

Kid Peligro Jiu-Jitsu News . . . Surprise Birthday Party for Grandmaster Helio Gracie at Gracie Humaita

It isn't everyday that you turn 95, it is also not everyday that you can catch Grandmaster Helio Gracie by surprise, but it all happened yesterday as Royler and Rolker Gracie and the gang at Gracie Humaita threw a surprise birthday party for the Grandmaster. Present at the event were a host of Humaita's top people. Of special note were Rickson Gracie who along with friend Breno Sivac presented the Grandmaster with a brand new Red Belt with Gold stripes. Also noteworthy were the presence of Robson Gracie, Pedro Valente Sr and Kyra & Robsinho Gracie.
Grandmaster was super happy: "It was a very special event for everyone I never expected this, this was a great surprise to me. Jiu-Jitsu helped become a better person an it is an honor for me to see so many honorable people following Jiu-Jitsu.. "
Royler was moved: "It was a very emotional moment for me. There were over 100 people there. It is a tree that has given many fruits and now we are all collecting the fruits of the family's effort. My dad is a monumental figure in the art and beyond the art and a lot of people, fighters, instructors, reporters and others are enjoying a career because of his, his brother's and the family's efforts."
Pedro Valente Sr eloquently put it: "At the time we were all studying to become doctors and attorney's and I was also learning to become a Jiu-Jitsu master. Now people still study to become doctor's and attorney's but my sons optioned to become Jiu-Jitsu instructors and follow the lessons and the path of the Grandmaster"
On a personal note, this humble reporter concurs with much of what was said. Jiu-Jitsu has enriched and changed my life tremendously both on a personal and professional level. I've met so many great people throughout the years and have seen the change in their lives as well and for that I am forever thankfull. I've had the chance to take several private lessons with the Grandmaster and to partake of his hospitality, his vision and wisdom on many occasions. I can say htat when you are around the Grandmaster, he always has a great story to tell, along with words of inspiration and advice. He's always made me feel like I was the most important person in the world and that he is sooo happy to be sharing time with me. I can honestly say that I treasure and will treasure every one of those moments in my heart forever.

Coach Toner will also have a tuff fight, but both are training hard and with the support of the local crowd nobody can stop them!!!
The card also has Frank Trigg (17-6), Phil Baroni (12-10), Pete Spratt (18-14) and more.

Great job on the mat Saturday, Coach Mat Jubera won the absolute gi finishing everybody, Coach James Stradersmith won the kimono and took second in the no gi, Brian Carlson won his division (he got pushed up to the up to 220 weight division) he was losing in the final 15 seconds and submitted his opponent with a reverse arm bar. Andrew Dudderar won his division, and took third in open, Chuan Simms won his division, Mark Long won division, and there were many more of which I am forgetting, please email Denver@eastonbjj.com with your results, we would love to post them. A Huge congratulations to Gold medalists Chaun Simms who won Purple Belt both weight and absolute 9 fights 8 submissions! Ian Leiberman Blue Belt 5 fights 5 submissions, and Mike Tousignant 5 fights with no points scored on him! Ian and Mike closed the key for EBJJ!! Gvork went out there and gave it his all going 1 and 1. We are super proud off all the competitors, we know they trained like they wanted it and it paid off. Great job!!! Chaun received his Brown Belt for his work so you can be sure to see him on the mat working hard as always preparing to give the brown belts war!

What Jiu-Jitsu Means To Me
I do Jiu-Jitsu because it makes me doubly strong in a mental and physical way. It helps me to overcome any fears of competing because I know I can finish strong and proud of what I did. I also will learn my weaknesses to get better at and as of what to take time on. Each day I roll against Brynn, Tanner, Raph, Anita or Hall. I feel confident in my strength, skill and size.
I think Jiu-Jitsu means to overcome, to strategize, to feel, to enjoy, to discipline yourself in ways to beat the opponent or just to teach the opponent how not to do and what do do. You teach yourself how to become disciplined, strong, and yet kind or aggressive to your opponent. You act like a teacher for the younger kid or beginners. You act like a soldier for the older, more advanced kids.
I have reached a level where I cannot stay. I feel that I want that Jr. Black Belt more than a Red Belt but not a White Belt because as a white belt you learn, enjoy, and absorb things like moves but as a Red Belt you are the one who is teaching, giving, old, and at the end of the absorbing process and in the giving process. You can always enjoy being a white belt.
I have shown my devotion to the sport by competing and one thing I have learned from competing is that if you lose don't cry just keep trying and sometimes the person who beat you was just the better grappler that day. The preparations you have to make have to be out of the ball park you have to go to the maximum and beyond in your practices and in your training to have a chance of getting a first place trophy or medal you can not just hope for the best, you really have to be the best in grappling. I have also shown my devotion to the sport by sticking to it, staying in the sport. Sometimes you don't want to go to Jiu-Jitsu but you have to get better and I have had my days where I do not want to come but I still do, even when I sprained my wrist or when I dislocated my thumb I still came and practiced. I just put tape around it and I have become a great person from doing Jiu-Jitsu. I have been able to beat people way bigger and stronger because my technique is so good. I like doing this sport because it shows you how to really defend yourself properly and effectively to truly protect yourself from bullies.
These are some techniques that I really like: the triangle and the heel pick. I like the triangle because I can finish anybody in it and it's easy to catch people in it because there are so many more places you can get people in than any other finish, I think. A triangle is where you put your leg on the back of their head and your other leg over your ankle then you squeeze your knees together and pull their head down only one arm should be in now. Push their arm over to the other side of your body so their arm is across their neck and make them tap. The heel pick is a take-down and I like it because it's easy to do on people and it is really effective. To do the heel pick you shoot in from standing and wrap your hand around the ankle with no thumbs, stand up completely and pull their ankle up to make them off balance and make them fall.
The armbar is a finish just like the triangle. The armbar can be from many positions just like the triangle. To do an armbar you must have one of the opponent's arms. You slide your knee up from their side to above their head. Then lift up their other arm and slide your ankle to their head and swing your left leg over their head. Sit back and bridge your hips. Make sure their thumb is pointing away from your body towards the sky. This next one is from the guard the last was from mount. To do this armbar you must be on the bottom of guard. The person's arms must be on your chest with your left hand grab their right wrist and the tricep with your right hand. Now, put your left foot in their right hip, push off and change your angle. Next, swing your left leg completely over their head and make sure their arm is straight and their thumb is pointing toward the sky.
In my five years of training I have been able to learn what being a Jr. Black Belt is. You have to compete, help others, lead the class and most importantly friendship with others. You can't be a Jr. Black Belt without support from your friends and family because then you can't feel happy about yourself and your performance in that tournament. When you compete you must learn how to deal with loss like not to cry, stomp off the mat or scream in agony. You also must be able to be a good winner not to scream, yell, and just to be a good sport and tell the other person great job. To lead the warm-ups is to be a leader to be loud. Helping others is a big thing you cannot just squish people you have to show them how to get out of a position or how to advance from that position. Being a leader is to have great technique and be a great example to others to follow and learn how to do things properly from you. I like leading because kids look up to me for advice or Keegan but I just like leading the class and hearing the yes sirs right after I give a command.

FIGHTING WITH THE HAMMER:
What Jiu-Jitsu Means to Me
“Sometimes you have to spend a long time being the nail before you can get to be the hammer.”
Recently, I’ve heard this quote said quite often during my Jiu-Jitsu classes by Professor Marshall. In stating and restating this idea to us, he is trying to emphasize how easy it is to feel discouraged by the fact that when you try hard at something, you still might not succeed. Throughout my six or so years of Jiu-Jitsu training, the most important thing I’ve learned is that when one feels as if they are not as good at something as someone else, or they are constantly losing to others, it does not mean that they have a good excuse to quit.
I’ve found that when I set out to do something on my own accord, the biggest challenge is to follow through with it. When I first started taking Jiu-Jitsu, before almost every class, my brother and I would beg and plead to our mother to let us quit. It wasn’t so much the fact that we didn’t like Jiu-Jitsu, but simply the fact that we could not wrap our adolescent young minds around such a large word as commitment. It was just no fun having to come to the mat three times a week simply to work hard at something. However, most kids have to be dragged to any extra-curricular activity they may be taking part in at a young age. The real test is when they get older. If they find that they truly loathe their activity after taking it for several years, I can say it’s probably best to move on.
When I got older – around twelve or thirteen years old – I realized that I honestly needed Jiu-Jitsu in my life. I went through a strange depression phase where I felt that Jiu-Jitsu was one of the only things in my life that I could hang on to – where I felt that it was something worth working hard for. So I did just that. I started working hard. Instead of simply coming to class and consuming oxygen like the other kids seemed to be at that time, I started taking Jiu-Jitsu very seriously. And suddenly, I began to realize the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu. I was getting stronger. I was becoming more confident. Things that I always knew could happen but never thought would happen to me began to take place. The transformation is clear: instead of beginning a take-down match by closing my eyes, sticking my head under, and hoping that my opponent would please find a way to flip me over quick, I now have many days when I can come in and take any one down in seconds flat.
But there’s the catch – the keyword: “I now have many days…” – but that does not mean all days. Besides the good days, I always have days that are there simply to remind that I have quite a great deal of things to learn before I can expect myself to have great days everyday. As far as great days go, those are there to remind me why I love Jiu-Jitsu: because it is rewarding when you work hard for something and then suddenly succeed.
This is why I can really relate to the metaphor of being the nail for a long time and finally getting a chance to be the hammer. Jiu-Jitsu has taught me that when one works to accomplish what they’ve set out for, they are rewarded. And I believe that this is a good incentive for me to try in everything I do.
Besides all of this, I’ve learned quite a few other surprising things about myself through my Jiu-Jitsu classes. When I was younger – still going through the “nail” phase – there were a lot more teenaged kids taking lessons with me. They always seemed to be strong and confident, and – what struck me the most – very obviously full of shining technique. Some of them were quite unenthusiastic to have to work with some so much younger than themselves as I was, however they all tried their hardest to teach me and explain to me the moves that they were making and techniques that they were using. It always made me feel good about myself – that I deserved to be taught by them and to be aware of what I was doing wrong. I appreciated their help more than they could have known.
At that point, I didn’t believe that I would ever reach that stage of wisdom – enough to teach another student – and if I had believed that, I wouldn’t have believed how fast the years would fly before I was at that stage. Recently, however, I’ve realized that – sure enough – that stage has come. The classes I take have become filled with more willing, younger students and less of the experienced, older students. Though I might have enjoyed spending more time working on my strength and endurance with people my age, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with some of the younger students in recent classes.
I honestly love teaching Jiu-Jitsu to the kids. I feel as if it is an opportunity to make a difference in their outlook on Jiu-Jitsu. I love the way that if it is taught correctly in a way that shows it’s art of the tactics in a good light, the child might actually see all the opportunities they have to learn in their future. They could be motivated to keep trying until they can get good – or until they can move into their “hammer” phase.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Boulder has made such a difference in my life ever since I started it. It’s given me something to cling to. Something to be proud of – not to mention the positive attention it brings me in school. I’ve realized recently that Jiu-Jitsu is a kind of family for me. It’s not the typical kind, but a family nonetheless. I can always come back to the people I’m familiar with, and simply learn something new. I can always take out my emotions – whether they be good or bad – on Jiu-Jitsu by working just that much harder.
Jiu-Jitsu…A Part of Me

Jiu-Jitsu has been a part of my life for a long time. I’ve been taking classes since I was six years old and I still love them. Although I’ve been through some rough patches, I can always think of Jiu-Jitsu and think of something positive. There are many things that Jiu-Jitsu means to me, but the main ones are discipline, exercise, and training, winning and losing, testing and promotions, the lessons I’m taught, the Jiu-Jitsu set of mind, a cool hobby, and self defense.
First, Jiu-Jitsu means discipline to me. When I began taking classes, I was very rude, impolite and had terrible posture. I’ve learned many things on manners and being respectful. And although my posture still is sometimes a little off, I can actually sit straight at the few fancy dinner parties I’ve had to attend recently. I now know when to hold back a joke or when to say “thank you.” I now have discipline that I didn’t have before I began taking Jiu-Jitsu.
Second, at Jiu-Jitsu, I get a lot of exercise. This is becoming more and more important for me because I am getting less and less at school. At Jiu-Jitsu, almost every time I go, when I leave I am sweaty and tired. Most people tell me that the more tired and sweaty you get, the more exercise you are getting. I’ve noticed that after I have a class I weigh less than before. This is why exercise is a large part of Jiu-Jitsu for me.
Training. It’s a huge part of Jiu-Jitsu. This ties in with exercise because when I train, I exercise a ton. When I train, I try to use the knowledge I have to fight. Sometimes I have tricks up my sleeve. Other times, I have no idea what I’m doing. Most of the time, I lose fights, but that’s okay because it toughens me and I learn how to win. If I’m working with new students or smaller kids, I sometimes try to help them out so they learn a little more. If I’m working with larger students, sometimes, I just hope I don’t break something. The problem is I get hurt a lot, but nowadays, I tough it out.
Jiu-Jitsu is all about winning and losing. When I win it feels great. When I lose, it sometimes does feel bad. But as Professor Marshall has said “Sometimes you have to spend a long time being the nail before you can get to be the hammer.” This quote rings out through my ears every time I lose. It helps me remember patience because I know that one day I will be the hammer. Losing isn’t terrible. It is a natural part of life; a learning experience. After all, if you keep learning, you’ll never make the same mistake twice…hopefully.
Another large part of this sport is testing and promotions. I have memories from about seven years ago when testing days were a day to impress the parents with what I learned. Every time I tested, I would always pass and receive a new belt. But with so many changes in the belt system since then, it’s taken me a long time to move up. Now, almost every test I pass and I get a stripe. It’s a far cry from years ago with a brand new belt with each test. Back then, tests were a huge deal. I would stress about them the night before, hoping I’d pass. Now, it seems a little laid back because I typically know the material like the back of my hand and it’s all review. Well, here I am finally at the end of the children’s belts and about to begin adults. Then it will be the same thing all over again only it will take much more than seven years. Much more.
I am taught many lessons at Jiu-Jitsu. Not just how to fight. Also things like good manners, controlling one’s emotions, and respect. Lessons like what to do when one gets lost in a grocery store, when someone is bullying me at school, and how to handle strangers. Things like healthy habits, responsibility, and where and when one can use Jiu-Jitsu. These lessons are important and without this school, I may have had to learn these lessons the hard way.
When I think of Jiu-Jitsu, I typically think of the set of mind it puts me into. In this complex sport, one needs to stay cool and calm. I try to use this principle in life. Be a rock, the kind you can sit on. Hard but comfortable…not too comfortable, though. It’s kind of like being a Samurai or Jedi Knight. It feels good.
Jiu-Jitsu is a pretty cool hobby for me. When people ask me what I like to do, I tell them “I like to do Jiu-Jitsu” and their eyes grow wide and they are intrigued to hear more. So I tell them the basics and they think that Jiu-Jitsu is pretty cool. I think so too. I think why I like it so much because for years I’ve been obsessed with Star Wars and Jedi Knights, and the Jedi are like the Jiu-Jitsu mind set.
“It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant.” This is what Wikipedia had to say on Jiu-Jitsu. I agree with that priciple. The key word in that sentence is defence. That’s what Jiu-Jitsu most importantly means to me. I’ve had to use it a few situations and has always helped me when I need it. It gives me self-confidence to know that I have a secret. That secret is, when I need to, I can Kick Butt!
All in all, I think my parents signing me up for Jiu-Jitsu was one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. I have lots of fun, learn a lot, and become a better person. My life would be very different without Jiu-Jitsu. It is a good place to escape school and homework, but I still learn a lot, and that’s what it’s all about.

Easton BJJ is back from Long Beach with 4 medals! - Jun 10, 2008 - 5:02pm
Last weekend 15 EBJJ students fought at the World BJJ Tournament, with four of them bringing back medals.
- The first day we had David Binder, Nicholas Hardy, Elizabeth Tran, Keegan Byers, Kyle Cardona, Ross Hansen, Jami Lyn Wakkinen, Julia O'Riordan, Andres Hermida and James Strater-Smith fighting their way to the podium, with Elizabeth, Keagan and Julia reaching the highest place. Everybody fought really well and we want to congratulate all.
- The second day the war continued with Matt Jubera, Andrew Dudderar, Casey Byers, Michael Hresko and Chaun Sims. Unfortunately no medals this day, but great fights and close matches.
- The third day Andrew Dudderar, Matt Jubera and Chaun Sims came back to fight their weight (Andrew and Matt) and Absolute (Chaun), with Andrew bringing back a Bronze medal.
- The fourth and last day was just to relax and see amazing fights where the black belt divisions were taken. Standouts were Roger Gracie, Xande Ribeiro, Andre Galvao and Sergio Morais as Well as American Stand outs Rafael Lovato and Bill Cooper, see photos and the photos of the black belt champions at http://www.graciemag.com/news/151/ARTICLE/10823/2008-06-09.html We also saw Prof Easton among the first group to receive his Black Belt (2 degrees) and teaching diploma from the International Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation. So, a lot of BJJ girls got together last Friday at the Boulder school and had a great time training, and it inspired me to organize a women's training session, even maybe just once a month, for all the women of the Easton BJJ team. It's fun to get the girls together from all our schools, and I know I felt inspired to train harder knowing there are other women out there doing the same thing.

First off a huge congrats to Keegan and Casey for taking first place! Julia also did great with a second place, she gets my vote for most heart of the day, she really put it all out there and lost a very game fight on her third fight after a dominating performance in her first two. Ian Leiberman and James Strader-Smith both won their first two fights and lost their third, both put on a great show. Jessie Kim won his first and lost his second by points in a great match, more time and experience and I believe Jessie has the tools to be a champion.

You’ve probably seen some new faces around the last few days if you’ve been on the mats in Boulder. Our Guests are first Professors Kenny and Keith Florian, Kru (Thai for teacher) Mark DellaGrotte of Sitydotong Mauy Thai all preparing Kenny who will be the Main Event for the UFC show that will be April 3rd at Broomfield event Center. Second Professors Pete (Drago) Sell and George Sotiropoulos from Mat Serra's Academy. Pete was on two seasons of the Ultimate Fighter Show once as a fighter and once as a Coach for Professor Sera’s team. George Was on last seasons show and let me tell you all these guys are extremely skilled, focused and dedicated athletes, and more importantly great guys.
Thursdays MMA Black belt class will be guest taught by Professor Keith Florian, while Professor Pete “Drago” Sell will be teaching the Black belt class on Monday night. All Black Belt Program students are encouraged to come!!!
In other news we have a handful of students heading out to the Pan American Championships in LA including but not limited to Keegan Byers, James Strader-Smith, Ian Lieberman, Kyle Cordona, Jesse Kim, Julia O'rorke and Professors Easton and Correa.

This Monday the Denver location is going to start a new schedule with more purple, black and conditioning classes, a new Muay Thai Intermediate class, Kids classes and a family class on Saturdays, where the parents will be on the mat with their Tigers!!! Great Seminar, New Nelts and Champions in the EBJJ academy!!! - Mar 11, 2008 - 6:59pm
Last weekend was full of good news for the EBJJ academy.
Starting with the CKA tournament Saturday where we had two gold medals. Kyle Cordona won the Juvenil Advanced and Michael Creech won the Adults Begginer. They both won all their fights with submissions!
Sunday we had a great Seminar with Prof Helio "Soneca" Moreira where he showed some amazing techniques! On the seminar Kevin McLaughlin got his blue belt and Mr. Kim Yee was promoted to Brown Belt. Prof Easton and all the EBJJ staff were very proud of their graduations and hard work.
Congratulations to Kim, Kevin, Kyle and Michael!!!

Professor Moreira Seminar in Boulder and Ludwig prepares for battle! - Mar 4, 2008 - 9:15am
Helio Soneca will be teaching a seminar at Easton BJJ Boulder on March 9th at 10am. The seminar will be 2 Hours with Kimono. $50 if you come in the day of and $40 pre-register ($25 if you are in the Black Belt Program). There are a limited number of spots for the seminar, so register early.

Developing a game plan for the one of the world's toughest fighters - on a few weeks' notice - would be a challenge for any athlete. But trying to cut down to an extra weight class in the process could be called madness.
But that's exactly what Duane "Bang"Ludwig (16-7) is trying to do for his upcoming fight with former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi (27-3).
The Ludwig-Gomi fight headlines the World Victory Road's debut show, which takes place Wednesday, March 5 at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
The co main event bout takes place at 154 lbs.
"When I got the call, I was 183 lbs.," said Ludwig, a two-time UFC fighter. "I was supposed to fight Steve Berger (at a Strikeforce show) at 170 lbs., so I was trying to keep on some weight. The call came, so it was time to start dropping the weight."
WVR actually called up Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker to inquire about Ludwig for the fight, and once Ludwig got assurance that Berger wouldn't be left without an opponent, he accepted the fight.
However, will such a drastic, unexpected cut affect Ludwig's performance?
"Probably," Ludwig admitted. "But we'll see what happened. I couldn't pass up the fight because it's such a great opportunity."
A win over Gomi, arguably the world's top lightweight fighter, could be the biggest victory of of Ludwig's career, though a January 2003 first-round KO of Jens Pulver (when Pulver was in his absolute prime) is right up there.
So, how do you fight Gomi, a fighter who likes to stand and trade but is as equally dangerous with submissions?
"I'm just going to see where the fight goes," Ludwig said. "If I can get a submission, of course I'll take a submission. Ideally, though, I'd like to keep it on the feet and see what I can do there. But if I get cracked or don't have luck there, I'll be happy to take the fight to the ground. But it's MMA, so we'll just see what happens.

BATTLEQUEST 7: RESURRECTION! And ROCKY MOUNTAIN BAD BOYZ - Feb 14, 2008 - 3:07pm
Next Friday, Feb 22nd, Coach Toner will be representing our academy in the main event on BattleQuest. He will be facing the tuff Brett Roller (7-1). Toner has a 6-1 record and last appeared on Battlequest 6 when he finished Wyoming collegiate wrestler Nick Mamalis.
The night will feature 10 matches and will take place at the Softball Country Sports Pavilion. The under card has also the charismatic Kenneth Seegrist, Easton BJJ student.
Good luck Coach Toner and Kenneth and thanks for always representing the school!!!
Also on Thursday Feb 21 Chaun Sims and Reid Delman will be making their mma debuts in the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz event. The event will take place at the Paladium Night Club in Commerce City.

They say the battle is not truly won in the ring but in preparation on the mat before hand and with Master Renzo Gracie in his corner Professor Almeida showed in style why he is a champion. Thank you Professor for being a model of strength, fortitude and self control. Professor Almeida is one of the most controlled and self disciplined people I know and it showed Saturday night in his first round submission over Yundt. In honor of Professors win.... its time to once again shadow his model of perseverance and hit the mat (I'm sure he is doing the same thing). Many other great fights really showcasing the power of BJJ including submissions by Minotoro over Tim Sylvia, Marquart over Horn, (all of the above by guillotine) and Mir over Lesnar.
The most important kind of control is control of ones self!

This Saturday (Feb 2nd) we are having our Grand Opening for the kids classes. Prof Marshal and Coach Hermida will be leading Orientations for our new Tigers and a small party afterwards. So if you have kids or know somebody interested to bring theirs, the Grand Opening will start at 1pm and will have a hour duration.
The kids classes are going to be Tuesdays and Thursdays and the ages are from 4 to 14 years old.
Since we're having this grand opening for the kids, the Open Mat will be from 2:30pm to 3:30pm this Saturday only.

I’m here in Las Vegas with Professor Almeida, Strength and conditioning coach Martin Rooney, Renzo Gracie, and the rest of the team in final preparation for the big fight. Weigh ins are in a few hours and Professor is looking strong with very few pounds remaining to shed and I 100% believe he's going to disappoint a lot of Yundt fans this evening! With great guys like we have on our team, and a champions attitude like professor has, I believe we have a winning combination.

Dear students and freinds,
Hopefully everybody had a great holiday and is ready to get in full swing with their training. I expect this to be a big year for Easton BJJ with some great changes and additions. On the MMA front look out for my great friend, and fellow Renzo Gracie team mate Professor Ricardo Almeida in his comeback fight in the UFC this Saturday night. Master Renzo Gracie will be in his corner and its going to be war. So its another weekend in Vegas for me as I would not miss this one for the world! Professor Almeida is one of my top picks for the champ at 185 and I imagine were going to see why on Saturday night.
Also I am looking for accommodation's preferably in the boulder area for 4 special guests and friends of mine from 3/16 to 3/29. If anybody knows a rental situation or has any Ideas... it would be greatly appreciated, please contact me through boulder@eastonbjj.com or speak with me personally.

According to Globo News, Professor Ryan Gracie was found dead this morning. Our condolences to the Gracie family. Ryan was often referred to as the most valiant of the Family and was seen as a fierce competitor and representative of Gracie Jiu-jitsu in Pride, ADCC, and BJJ mats around the world. We will miss him greatly. Ryan is survived by his son.

Grapplers Quest Results - Denver Students
Last weekend we had a group of students representing the school on the Grapplers Quest Tournament In Vegas and we had great results! Elizabeth Tran got two silver medals (GI and No GI), Aaron Robinson got 3rd place on the No GI division and Corey Harris got 3rd place on the GI division.
This tournament is considered one of the hardest in Grappling! Congratulations to all the students!!!

Congratulations to Brian Olson on his gold medal in the US Open - Nov 2, 2007 - 4:28pm
After three years of retirement this three-time Olympian and former World medalist began his comeback into competitive Judo by winning 1st place in the prestigious international tournament, the US Open. Olson won his last match by armbar in the last minute. This win virtually guarantees him a slot in the 2008 US Olympic Team Trials for Judo. Be sure to congratulate Brian when you see him practicing in our Academy.

Cachorrao signs UFC deal
Contract is good for six fights
On first hand for GRACIEMAG.com, Ricardo Almeida revealed that he has just signed a six fights contract with UFC. Cachorrao is considered one of the most talented fighters today. The comeback of Renzo Gracie’s black belt to MMA was scheduled to happen early this month at Cage Fury Fighting Championship, but the event never came through. Therefore, Cachorrao negotiated a deal with Dana White.
